Re-Imagining Collective Futures from Korail 

Paraa invites Bangladeshi creatives, artists and collectives to submit proposals for creative investigations that takes its starting point from Korail—the largest informal settlement in Bangladesh—as a site of inquiry, encounter and imagination.

Korail is often represented through the language of informality, density, poverty and inadequate infrastructures. Yet, beyond these limitations, it is also a place shaped by complex social networks, collective practices, resourcefulness, cultural expressions and everyday negotiations over space and belonging.

This open call invites you to work closely with Korail as a starting point to reimagine ideas, and use it as a lens through which to examine the present civic realities of Bangladesh. What can Korail reveal about who has access to the city, public space, services, safety, mobility, dignity and decision-making? What forms of exclusion exist in our cities, and how are people already creating their own ways of living, sharing and caring despite them?

We invite proposals that do not merely document or represent Korail, but engage with the neighbourhood as a living site of knowledge and possibility. Creatives may work through visual art, performance, film, sound, architecture, design, research, participatory practices, installation, public art or interdisciplinary approaches.

The projects may investigate questions around:

• Who has the right to the city and its public spaces?

• How can informal and formal urban spaces be compared and reimagined?

• What might a more inclusive and just city look like?

• How do communities negotiate civic limitations in everyday life?

• What can Korail teach us about collective living, care and resilience?

• How can art contribute to imagining peaceful futures beyond existing social and spatial inequalities?

• What alternative forms of citizenship, belonging and public life might be possible?

We are particularly interested in proposals that demonstrate how you will work with people and contexts in Korail or take Korail as a point of beginning to re-imagine larger contexts.

The aim is not to propose a single solution for Korail, but to use the neighbourhood as a starting point for reimagining the present and collectively envisioning a peaceful, inclusive and just future.

Who can apply

Bangladeshi creatives, artists and collectives working across disciplines are encouraged to apply. Emerging and established practitioners are welcome. 

Age Limit: Minimum 18 years, maximum no limit

WHAT WILL WE PROVIDE
Up to BDT 50,000 per project.
Mentorship and guidance by Paraa’s team and Machan’s team + other experts/ creatives. 

What to submit

1. Project proposal – maximum 300 words

2. Approach and methodology – how you propose to engage with Korail and its communities (300)

3. Budget estimate

4. Timeline

5. Artist/collective profile and portfolio

Proposals should demonstrate sensitivity to the people, histories and everyday realities of Korail and should avoid extractive or purely representational approaches.

Korail is not simply a problem to be solved. It is a place from which we can ask different questions about the city—and imagine different futures for all of us.

This creative art lab is supported by Nagarikata: Civic Engagement Fund (CEF) Programme, funded by Switzerland, Canada and the European Union and managed by the GFA Consulting Group. The artist reserves the copyright of the artwork but is bound to present the artworks at the events organized as part of the programme. Paraa will also present the artworks at its own art events.

কড়াইল থেকে সম্মিলিত আগামীর ভাবনা

Paraa বাংলাদেশের শিল্পী, সৃজনশীল ও শিল্পী-সমষ্টিদের কাছ থেকে সৃজনশীল অনুসন্ধানমূলক শিল্প প্রকল্পের প্রস্তাব আহ্বান করছে। এই প্রকল্পের সূচনা বিন্দু হবে বাংলাদেশের বৃহত্তম অনানুষ্ঠানিক বসতি কড়াইল—অনুসন্ধান, পারস্পরিক সংযোগ ও কল্পনার একটি ক্ষেত্র হিসেবে।

কড়াইলকে প্রায়ই অনানুষ্ঠানিকতা, ঘনবসতি, দারিদ্র্য ও অপর্যাপ্ত অবকাঠামোর ভাষায় উপস্থাপন করা হয়। কিন্তু এসব সীমাবদ্ধতার বাইরেও কড়াইল এমন একটি জায়গা, যা জটিল সামাজিক নেটওয়ার্ক, সম্মিলিত চর্চা, নিজস্ব উদ্যোগ, সাংস্কৃতিক প্রকাশ এবং স্থান ও অধিকার নিয়ে প্রতিদিনের নানা সমঝোতার মধ্য দিয়ে গড়ে উঠেছে।

এই উন্মুক্ত আহ্বান আপনাকে কড়াইলকে একটি সূচনা বিন্দু হিসেবে নিয়ে নতুন ধারণা পুনর্কল্পনা করতে এবং বাংলাদেশের বর্তমান নাগরিক বাস্তবতাকে বোঝার একটি লেন্স হিসেবে কড়াইলকে ব্যবহার করতে আমন্ত্রণ জানায়। শহর, জনপরিসর, সেবা, নিরাপত্তা, চলাচল, মর্যাদা ও সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণে কারা প্রবেশাধিকার পায়—কড়াইল এ বিষয়ে আমাদের সামনে কী তুলে ধরতে পারে? আমাদের শহরগুলোতে কী ধরনের বঞ্চনা ও বহিষ্করণ বিদ্যমান? এবং এসব সীমাবদ্ধতার মধ্যেও মানুষ কীভাবে নিজেদের জীবনযাপন, ভাগাভাগি ও পারস্পরিক যত্নের নিজস্ব পদ্ধতি তৈরি করছে?

আমরা এমন প্রস্তাব আহ্বান করছি, যা কেবল কড়াইলকে নথিভুক্ত বা উপস্থাপন করবে না; বরং একটি জীবন্ত জ্ঞান ও সম্ভাবনার ক্ষেত্র হিসেবে এই neighbourhood-এর সঙ্গে সক্রিয়ভাবে যুক্ত হবে। সৃজনশীলকর্মীরা ভিজ্যুয়াল আর্ট, পারফরম্যান্স, চলচ্চিত্র, শব্দ, স্থাপত্য, নকশা, গবেষণা, অংশগ্রহণমূলক চর্চা, ইনস্টলেশন, পাবলিক আর্ট কিংবা আন্তঃবিষয়ক পদ্ধতিতে কাজ করতে পারেন।

প্রকল্পগুলোতে বিশেষভাবে নিম্নলিখিত প্রশ্নগুলো অনুসন্ধান করা যেতে পারে:

• শহর ও এর জনপরিসরের ওপর কার অধিকার রয়েছে?

• অনানুষ্ঠানিক ও আনুষ্ঠানিক নগরপরিসরকে কীভাবে তুলনা ও পুনর্কল্পনা করা যায়?

• আরও অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক ও ন্যায়সংগত শহর দেখতে কেমন হতে পারে?

• মানুষ কীভাবে প্রতিদিনের জীবনে নাগরিক সীমাবদ্ধতার সঙ্গে সমঝোতা করে?

• সম্মিলিত জীবনযাপন, পারস্পরিক যত্ন ও টিকে থাকার সক্ষমতা সম্পর্কে কড়াইল আমাদের কী শেখাতে পারে?

• বিদ্যমান সামাজিক ও স্থানিক বৈষম্যের বাইরে শান্তিপূর্ণ ভবিষ্যৎ কল্পনায় শিল্প কীভাবে ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে?

• নাগরিকত্ব, অন্তর্ভুক্তি ও জনজীবনের কী বিকল্প রূপ সম্ভব হতে পারে?

বিশেষভাবে আমরা এমন প্রস্তাবের প্রতি আগ্রহী, যেখানে স্পষ্টভাবে দেখানো হবে আপনি কীভাবে কড়াইলের মানুষ ও প্রেক্ষাপটের সঙ্গে কাজ করবেন, অথবা বৃহত্তর প্রেক্ষাপটকে পুনর্কল্পনার জন্য কড়াইলকে কীভাবে সূচনা বিন্দু হিসেবে গ্রহণ করবেন।

উদ্দেশ্য কড়াইলের জন্য একটি নির্দিষ্ট সমাধান প্রস্তাব করা নয়; বরং এই neighbourhood-কে একটি সূচনা বিন্দু হিসেবে ব্যবহার করে বর্তমানকে নতুনভাবে কল্পনা করা এবং সম্মিলিতভাবে একটি শান্তিপূর্ণ, অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক ও ন্যায়সংগত ভবিষ্যৎ নির্মাণের স্বপ্ন দেখা।

কারা আবেদন করতে পারবেন

বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে কাজ করেন এমন বাংলাদেশি সৃজনশীল, শিল্পী ও কালেক্টিভদের আবেদন করতে উৎসাহিত করা হচ্ছে। উদীয়মান ও প্রতিষ্ঠিত—উভয় পর্যায়ের শিল্পী/সৃজনশীলকর্মীরা আবেদন করতে পারবেন।

বয়সসীমা: ন্যূনতম ১৮ বছর; সর্বোচ্চ বয়সসীমা নেই।

• Paraa-এর টিম ও Machan-এর টিম এবং অন্যান্য বিশেষজ্ঞ/সৃজনশীলদের কাছ থেকে মেন্টরশিপ ও পরামর্শ

প্রস্তাবনায় কড়াইলের মানুষ, ইতিহাস ও দৈনন্দিন বাস্তবতার প্রতি সংবেদনশীলতা থাকতে হবে এবং মানুষের জীবন ও অভিজ্ঞতাকে কেবল তথ্য বা উপাদান হিসেবে ব্যবহার করে এমন extractive বা নিছক প্রতিনিধিত্বমূলক পদ্ধতি এড়িয়ে চলতে হবে।

এই সৃজনশীল আর্ট ল্যাবটি Nagarikata: Civic Engagement Fund (CEF) Programme-এর সহায়তায় পরিচালিত হচ্ছে। এই কর্মসূচির অর্থায়ন করছে সুইজারল্যান্ড, কানাডা ও ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়ন এবং এটি পরিচালনা করছে GFA Consulting Group।

শিল্পী তাঁর/তাঁদের শিল্পকর্মের কপিরাইট সংরক্ষণ করবেন, তবে শিল্পী তার শিল্পকর্মটি কর্মসূচির অংশ হিসেবে আয়োজিত বিভিন্ন অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থাপন করতে বাধ্য থাকবেন। Paraa তাদের নিজস্ব শিল্প আয়োজনেও শিল্পকর্মগুলো উপস্থাপন করবে।
