Machan: The Story of Building a Cultural Community Space with the People of Korail

Paraa has been working with the youth of Korail for nearly six years to co-design Machan.  In 2024, Machan was launched through the inaugral “Moja Kori” Design Fest, a collaborative 4-day celebration involving over 60 artists and Korail residents rooted across sites in Korail. The name Machan was chosen by the residents themselves—a name rooted in their stories and their space-meaning platform. Today, Machan has become a hub of energy for Korail’s youth. Machan was built with funding support from the Federal Foreign Office, Germany with the Goethe Institut-Bangladesh. Even with studies, jobs, and household responsibilities, they are investing time to build and grow this space. They are planning initiatives and have already started implementing some. Korail is one of the largest informal settlements in Dhaka, Bangladesh, home to tens of thousands of low-income residents. Out of their everyday life, struggles, and hopes, Machan has emerged—a community and cultural space where the people of Korail themselves are imagining, creating, and dreaming.

And a brunch on 12th (10:30 am to 3pm) 

Dinner 7:00 to  10:00 pm.
? There will be an art raffle. Artists have kindly donated artworks that will be part of the Art Raffle Draw! Up to 10 dinner guests will win art works donated by different artists around the world. This is an exciting chance to own an original piece of art for the cost of the dinner ticket!
? There will be live music and performances by Korail youth and other performers who are donating their time in solidarity with Machan.

All proceeds will directly support the operation of Machan and its community programs

? মাচান ফান্ডরেইজিং ডিনার ২০২৫: একত্রে খাওয়া দাওয়া এবং স্বপ্ন বুনন! ??

মাচান: করাইলবাসীর সাথে গড়ে তোলা এক কালচারাল কমিউনিটি স্পেস। করাইলের প্রতিদিনের জীবন, সংগ্রাম আর সম্ভাবনার ভেতর থেকে জন্ম নিয়েছে মাচান—একটি কমিউনিটি ও সাংস্কৃতিক কেন্দ্র, যেখানে করাইলের মানুষ নিজেরাই ভাবছে, কাজ করছে এবং স্বপ্ন দেখছে। পাড়া, প্রায় ৬ বছর ধরে করাইলের তরুণ শক্তির সঙ্গে কাজ করে মাচান ডিজাইন করেছে। ‘মজা করি’ ডিজাইন ফেস্ট-এর মাধ্যমে মাচান-এর উদ্বোধন হয় ২০২৪ সালে। প্রায় ৬০ জন শিল্পী ও করাইলবাসীর যৌথ কাজের মধ্য দিয়ে শুরু হয় এই যাত্রা। নামটা দিয়েছেন করাইলবাসীরাই—মাচান : তাদের জায়গা, তাদের গল্পের অংশ। আজ মাচান করাইলের তরুণী-তরুণদের জন্য এক উজ্জ্বল প্রাণকেন্দ্র। পড়াশোনা, চাকরি আর সংসারের দায়িত্ব সামলিয়ে তারা সময় দিচ্ছে মাচান গড়ার কাজে। নিজেরা ভাবছে, পরিকল্পনা করছে, এবং ইতিমধ্যে কিছু কিছু উদ্যোগ বাস্তবায়ন শুরুও করে দিয়েছে। জার্মানির ফেডারেল ফরেন অফিস ও গ্যেটে-ইনস্টিটিউট বাংলাদেশের সহযোগিতায় নির্মিত মাচান শুধু একটি জায়গা নয়—এটি একটি যাত্রা। ঢাকার সবচেয়ে বড় স্বল্পআয়ের মানুষের অপ্রাতিষ্ঠানিক বসতি করাইলের বাস্তবতা ও ছোট বড় স্বপ্নের ভিতর থেকেই উঠে এসেছে মাচান—একটি সামষ্টিক সাংস্কৃতিক জায়গা, যেখানে করাইলবাসী নিজেরাই কল্পনা করছে, সৃষ্টি করছে, স্বপ্ন বুনছে।
