About SHALA

Located within the Aloki complex on Tejgaon Link Road, SHALA_Neighbourhood Art Space is a hub for collective exploration of how urban neighbourhoods are changing; learning from, and working with the neighbourhood around it to explore and understand the diverse needs, wants and expectations of the neighbourhood for the future.

Through artistic explorations, workshops, participatory approach led creative fellowships, and collaborative activities, SHALA seeks to build a living archive—a repository of shared stories, insights, and ideas that can shape the future of the neighbourhood and the city.

Vision and Mission

As SHALA Fellows, the vision is to create an inclusive, participatory platform where creativity and collaboration inform sustainable urban futures in response to climate change, keeping environmental justice on the forefront.

And the mission is to learn from and work with the neighbourhood, focusing on participation and co-creating knowledge utilizing your own style and approach of art and research interests that addresses the diverse cultural, social, and environmental dynamics of the area and its inhabitants.

What Do We Mean by Participatory Approach?

At SHALA, participatory approach means centering the voices, experiences, and knowledge of the community in all stages of exploration and creation. Participation needs responsibility with authority in partnership with other stakeholders, valuing collaboration over extraction, ensuring the process is driven by mutual respect and shared agency between creative practitioners and community members.

This approach not only enables richer, contextually grounded insights but also fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment among participants, given that activities will then be designed as a response to the diverse needs of the neighborhood.

Thematic Focus for 2025 Fellowship Cycle

On this round, we’re exploring three interconnected themes that shape urban life in Dhaka:

  1. Walkability:
Investigating pathways, accessibility, safety, focusing on gender equity, and the everyday experiences of mobility in urban neighbourhoods.

  2. Water Sources/Bodies:
Examining the relationship between neighbourhoods and their water systems—past, present, and future. How do water bodies influence urban life, and what stories do they hold about the community and environment?

  3. Creative City:
Unpacking the cultural life of the neighbourhood—leisure moments, collective activities, and the interplay of creativity and urban identity.

These themes are not rigid boundaries but starting points to inspire creative and research-driven engagements.
